We read in Acts 3:1, "One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon." This is a very clear indication from Scripture that right from the beginning of the Church there were set times in the day for common prayer. In light of this understanding the Divine Office need not be viewed as 'something only for monks' but is rather a spiritual practice of prayer for all Christians dating from the very birth of the Church.
Nevertheless, as monks we are keenly aware that our daily common prayer satisfies not only our personal needs and the needs of the community but aspires also to satisfy the needs of the Church and the World. The Psalter comprises the core of our common prayer and every human cry, lament, yearning, urge to give thanks, praise and aspiration are contained in it. As humans first, and monks second, we identify with all these human emotions in the prayer of the Psalter and it comes very natural for us to include you, our brothers and sisters, in this prayer to God in Christ Jesus.
Finally, we celebrate the Eucharist every single day. It is the 'source and summit' of everything we do and aspire to be as monks and Christians. We rejoice in the many friends, visitors and guests who participate in the Eucharist with us. For us, amidst the trials, sorrows and joys of life, the Heavenly Banquet has already begun.
One of the great sources of joy and edification for the monks is to see a brother coming to the end of his life on this earth and, no longer able to do any of his former duties, nevertheless participating in the Eucharist will be the last thing he lets go of just before the end.
If you are new to this website we look forward to seeing you sometime at our liturgy.
