Lectio Divina (spiritual reading) is one of the main pillars of the monastic life. The very first word in the Prologue of the Rule of St Benedict is 'Listen'. It is a word that permeates the whole Rule. It is not a coincidence that Benedict places this word at the beginning of his Rule. 'Listen' is also a word that characterizes the interior life of a monk. We strive to give a generous amount of time each day to reading the Word of God because, as St Jerome say's, 'Ignorance of Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.' This is a labor of love because as St Bernard say's, regarding his experience of doing lectio divina, 'I know not the exact moment when the bridegroom came. All I know is that my heart within me dilated and I was filled with joy at his presence. Then he was gone and I was left to myself.' Our attentive listening to the Word of God carries over in our listening carefully to the Abbot and to all our brothers. Ulitmately, it ends in a listening attitude to our brothers and sisters in the whole world and indeed to all creation.
